Nichole's Blog #4

I just finished reading from page 67 to 85, and let me say that I thought this section was the most boring/confusing section we have read so far. I say this because this whole section is Tayo's flashback with Josiah but then his flashback has a flashback of Josiah meeting Night Swan, so it was really confusing for me.
At first, when they were talking about the "younger sister" being all scandalous and then the "older sister" having to save her and what not I was totally confused but then I realized that that little story was probably about Auntie and Tayo's mom, because later in the section Auntie speaks to Tayo of how his mom was walking around naked.
My favorite part of this section was how Silko explained in great detail Tayo's past bonding experiences with Josiah because it gave me a feel of why Tayo really misses him that much. I also liked how Silko gave the reason why Auntie was so harsh to Tayo in his childhood.
It makes me happy that Rocky called Tayo his brother when they signed up for the army together because it probably made Tayo feel accepted for the very first time in his life, other then by Old Grandma and Josiah.
I have one question though, is Night Swan a prositute or an exotic dancer? Because when Night Swan was talking to Josiah she said that she loved dancing and she danced in clubs and what not but then Josiah totally freaked out and started calling her a whore, but I don't really see how an exotic dancer could be a whore. And throughout the whole Night Swan story, who the hek is this Lalo character? Because they don't really explain anything, they just kind of start talking about him.

My favorite quote for this section is: Rocky did not hear her; he was reading a sports magazine. But Tayo had heard; he always listened to her, and now his stomach felt tense; he was afraid maybe she was right, because he already knew she was right about most things" Page 76
This is my favorite quote of the section because it shows how Tayo still shows greta respect for Auntie, unlike Rocky, even though she has treated him badly for so many years. It also conveys how Tayo has learned from the past that Auntie is usually right, so he listens to her to learn of what may happen in the future.

  1. I totally agree with you, who is Lalo? That threw me off big time.

  2. Nichole,
    Thanks for your post.
When Silko is discussing the part about the sister (Tayo's mom) walking around naked, what can you infer is the reason? Was she just being promiscuous or did something happen to her?
You guys are very quick to judge...what else might be going on?
