Jenna Blog 3 (Up to pg 87)

I'm pretty sure that this is Blog 3, but this is only my first post for the book. I keep forgetting about the blogs.
Anyway, I like the book so far. Its a little hard to follow sometimes with his flashbacks and stuff, but the story-line is kind of interesting. I notice that Tayo doesn't seem to take the rejection from Auntie offensively anymore. Hes used to it by now. She sees him as a burden and that hes just something to take care of, and that shes only doing it to try not to shame the family any more than it already has been, in her eyes anyway. But what I don't get is if he is such a burden, why doesn't she want him to go with Rocky to the Army? Sure, Josiah needs help with stuff still, but there are other people there that can help out while hes gone. It seems like Auntie would be happier with him gone. I also really disagree with her dislike for Tayo. Sure hes half white, but hes still her nephew. I think if I had the same general views as her, not liking white people and stuff, that I would be mad at my sister for being promiscuous and feel bad for Tayo, or at least be nice to him. If everyone doesn't like him because hes a "half-breed" don't you think you'd have a little more sympathy for the kid? And being outwardly unkind to him because of something that he didn't choose and that he cant change is kind of stupid, and you'd think that an adult would realize that. GUESS NOT!
I've also seen that Rocky seems reserved and like he is almost ashamed of his heritage. Like, he didn't want to participate in the deer stuff that everyone was doing, like with sprinkling stuff on his nose. It seemed like that might be because of his heritage. It was something that everyone did, even those who didn't believe the same as the Indians, like the catholics.
I didn't understand, in the last few pages of this reading, Tayo keeps seeing Night Swan, right? She was the girl outside of the store or something, wasn't she? And she said something about his wife. WHEN DID HE GET MARRIED?!
Also, is Tayo the narrator?

Quotes:
“What did they know about raising cattle? They weren’t scientist. Auntie had been listening but did not seem to notice Rocky’s disrespect. She valued Rocky’s growing understanding of the outside world, of the books, of everything of importance and power.” (pg. 76)
I think this shows how much Auntie favors Rocky as well as how Rocky doesn't respect the Indian views on things, and how he talks down to their theories and stupid things like the differences in how to raise cattle. I think that if he liked the way he and his family are, then he would have nicer ways of displaying his constructive criticism. He just says it like they're stupid.

Tayo and Auntie understood each other very well. Years later Tayo wondered if anyone, even old Grandma or Josiah, ever understood her as well as he did.” (pg 67)
This quote seems very accurate to me. Tayo seems to be the person who can read Auntie the best. He knows just how she feels about everyone. He knows that she doesn't like him very much, and has accepted it. He is like the most in tune with her feelings for people.

  1. Jenna,
    Thanks for your post.
You are right on with Tayo and how he is able to understand Auntie. That may be the reason he just accepts her treatment. She is dealing with guilt also regarding Tayo's mother, what guilt do you think that is?
There is way more going on with her taking care of Tayo than most of you are seeing...
