Well again I can’t remember what the reading was so I just read until like 110 so I think that is good. So how did Josiah die? Because apparently now Josiah is dead. “They said that she left after Josiah’s funeral” (pg 104). This passage makes me wonder what happened and that his death contributed to Tayo’s guilt about leaving the ranch to go to Japan with Rocky. Tayo talks about the day of his mother’s funeral and how Josiah acted as a father because he took Tayo’s hand and comforted him. How patient Josiah is with Tayo shows how much he cares for Tayo. The whole family seems to believe that Rocky should not have to do anything because he has a football scholarship. Tayo and Josiah have to go and attend the sheep and the cattle but Rocky gets to stay home and this shows the favoritism towards Rocky, and Rocky represents a dream that most of the Indians want, like to get a football scholarship and college education. When Rocky dies I think that the dream he represented died and I think the hope that some harbored left. When Tayo goes to the pound he sees all this beautiful nature and he tells some legends that go with each creature. I think how he tells the legends is so beautiful and I enjoyed it. Night Swan is very “needy” and I think the relationship between Tayo and Night Swan will come between Josiah and him; maybe he dies at the hands of Tayo or something. The legend about the fly going to see the Mother to save mankind represents forgiveness and deliverance. How there were flies on Rocky when he died and how that upset Tayo shows that he needed to let go of his sadness and forgive himself. The story then goes to present and Tayo walks out of the bar and to get food instead of bear and that is good. He then walks home and I think that time alone helped clear his mind. He said that he could feel himself become visible again which means he has come to terms with his depression. He was even able to sleep a dreamless night which is super good.
“It ws a world alive, always changing and moving; and if you know where to look, you could see it, sometimes almost imperceptible, like the motion of the star across the sky”(pg 95)
There is the motif of his belly and how his stories and I think his conscious is held.

ReplyDeleteit seems that Tayo is in alot of bars.
I like your quote, it inspires me. I think that Josiah didn't die from Tayo. I think that Josiah found out but he probably died from old age or a sickness.
ReplyDeleteJessica, thanks for your post.
ReplyDeleteWhy do some Indians feel they need to get scholarships, and great jobs to be successful when for years their lives were based on the land and giving back to the land?
Is Tayo coming to terms with his depression or is he just making his way through it?
Thoughts anyone?
