During this reading the book really cleared up a lot of relationships and character views. It showed me how Auntie views Tayo as basically a burden that she has to deal with and take care of. She only cares for him for her sister and to reduce the shame of the family. This made me just hate Auntie even more. She's fairly selfish and just a plain idiot to me. Also this section spoke a lot of Josiah. He is a very kind man and it seems to me like he and Tayo have a very strong connection. Josiah's cattle story didn't seem to have any purpose to me at first. After thinking about it I feel that it's purpose was just to show Josiah's nature, his curiosity and laid back attitude. Also I believe it was put in to show Rocky's non-existent belief in Native American Customs. This new character Night Swan is very strange to me. She's an old dancer and I think she's a prostitute. Also Josiah has had some kind of emotional connection with her that I don't quite understand yet.
Quotes:
" 'Rocky is different,' she kept saying, 'but this one, he's supposed to stay here.' " (Page 73) - This quote shows Aunties attitude toward Tayo. She's trying to hold Tayo back because of the shame he has brought to her. She wants Rocky to succeed and go to war and doesn't want Tayo along with him.
"His eyes were still feverish as he spoke and his fingers quivered like the legs of a dreaming dog; at that moment he wanted her more than he had ever wanted her." (Page 85) - I really liked it's simile because i could totally picture a guys hands freaking out like my dogs legs do when she sleeps. I thought it was pretty funny. Also this quote is pretty passionate and I think it's talking about Night Swans old lover but I'm not quite sure.
I have a couple questions: Just to clear something up Robert is Auntie's husband? Also does Josiah have an interest in Night Swan?

Yeah, Robert is Auntie's husband and Josiah and Night Swan are together.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you about Auntie: She seems obsessed with protecting the family from shame, even if it hurts them. She is so mean! Arg.
I think Auntie is very protective of her family...Tayo and her seem to grow closer when Rocky is out living his life...Yet Auntie still treats him way different then Rocky...I agree the book is starting to make a lot more sense at this point in the story...I agree she is selfish and a bit on the crazy side but she is just doing it to protect her family, and you can't hate her for that...
ReplyDeleteI pretty much hate Auntie too, she's incredibly selfish and only cares about what the people of Laguna think of her.
ReplyDeleteDaniel,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your fourth blog.
Is Auntie truly selfish? She does take Tayo in...she could have just let him go to an orphanage. What about what was going with her sister compels her to take care of Tayo? Is it guilt?
Thoughts?
