Now that I don’t have a problem understanding the book, I can really start to enjoy it. This past section we just read was sort of different then all the other in the past. I think this passage has a lot to do with Tayo’s family, his relationships and memories of relationships he has had in the past. The biggest surprise so far I think is when Tayo sleeps with Night Swan. I think Tayo is jerk for sleeping with her because his uncle Josiah had an ongoing relationship with her. It is super random that Tayo just slept with her because he was all depressed before and now he is sleeping around. I also think that Tayo might have slept with her to cover up some of his own pain (just an idea). If Auntie is so worried about what people will think of Josiah and Night Swan I think she will flip when she finds out Tayo has a relationship with her too.
I think legend about the fly is beautiful. “A long time ago, way back in the time immemorial, the mother of the people got angry at them for the way they were behaving. For all she cared, they could go to hell-starve to death. The animals disappeared, the plants disappeared, and no rain came for a long time. It was the green-bottle fly who went to her, asking for forgiveness for the people. Since that time the people have been grateful for what the fly did for us” pg. (101). I think this very sweet way to think of the fly, which is known to be dirty and a pest. Strangely this makes me think differently of the fly in a good way. Out of all the big brave animals that could have gone and talked to “the mother” one of the smallest had the guts to do it. I really enjoy all the different legends that are shared in this book, if gives me a new outlook on life.
Some interesting quotes I found were “I have been watching you for a long time” pg. 99. Night Swan said this to Tayo witch makes me mad because she was with his uncle Josiah. This means she never fully like Josiah or else she would not be looking at other men, let alone his nephew. "You don't have to understand what is happening. But remember this day. "You don't have to understand what is happening. But remember this day. You will recognize it later. You are a part of it now" (100). I felt very confused but in a good way about this quote; it makes you really think about what is going on. To me this quote means even if you don’t know what is going on you will understand later in life and it will be a part of you as you are a part of happened. I think this is a good life lesson to follow, even if you don’t understand you will one day so keep going because what happened is going to be a part of you even if you don’t understand it yet.

Natalie,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your post. I am noticing when you make comments you aren't using capitalization consistently...please work on this.
Keep in mind that when Tayo slept with Night Swan it was probably his first experience with a woman and he was just about to leave for war.
They don't have a 'relationship'; they had sex that was it...why did Night Swan seduce him? What was she trying to do?
Thoughts anyone?
Ms. Champagne
