Devin's 4th

“What did they know about raising cattle? They weren’t scientist. Auntie had been listening but did not seem to notice Rocky’s disrespect. She valued Rocky’s growing understanding of the outside world, of the books, of everything of importance and power.” (pg. 76)
This quote portraits one of the themes within the book where auntie is blindly following the new traditions of the world not regarding their Indian traditions and such.
I would like to find out what is aunties motive for the new ways she wishes Rocky to learn.
“It had the clarity of the sky after a summer rainstorm, when the dust was washed away, and the colors of the hills and the shadows of the mesas had an intensity which made everything he saw accessible, as if he could touch all of it, even the little green rabbit weed growing close to the sand, its tiny leaves clustered like stars.” (pg. 78-79)
I felt this quote has great use of imagery and similes ect. I picked it out just because I think it foreshadows his life looking upward. After his summer rainstorm (the war) he now sees everything in a brighter light, as if he could access all of it.
I kind of got lost after either the auntie or the grandma starts talking. I’m guessing that night swan is the one dancing, but who does that refer to. If someone could clear this up that would be great. Or just tell me about the night swan section, thanks!

  1. I think Aunties motive for Rocky learning the new ways is so he can be successful in the "white" world. She wants him to bring honor to the family and all that. Also that Night Swan section confused me to so can't help you there.

  2. I think I can help with the Nigh Swan bit: Night Swan is either a prostitute or just a seductive dancer who used to work in a bar. At one point the book was talking about an ex-lover/customer(?) to show the power of her dancing over men. Josiah met her years ago when he went on a beer run. As far as I can tell they have built up a relationship since then, and yes she is older now.

  3. I think Auntie is way easier on Rocky and what he does because he is her own son and wants him to be successful in life...From what i get is Night Swan is a Dancer not a prostitute i think she is just very loose and has a bad reputation....so you like the way the story is written now or before between???

  4. Devin,
    Thanks for your post.
As far as Night Swan goes...she is living her life as a dancer who earns money, but why must she? You have to think about the time period. What kinds of jobs could women hold back then? Were they jobs that earned money so they could survive. You guys are so quick to judge someone, but remember the circumstances...
    Thoughts anyone?
