Nichole's first blog

Well I just did the english homework, and let me say I really like this book so far. Although, the flashbacks were kind of confusing for me to follow at first, but now I can totally separate past from present.
My favorite quote in the story so far is:
"...Rocky was the one who was alive, buying Grandma her heater with the round dial on front; Rocky was there in the college game scores on the sports page of the Albuquerque Journal. It was him, Tayo, who had died, but somehow there had been a mistale with the corpses, and somehow he was still unburied."
This is my favorite quote because it conveys how Tayo feels that he should've been the one to die in the war rather then Rocky, because Rocky had a life plan. This is just one of many quotes that conveys Tayo's depression caused by Rocky's and Josiah's deaths.

While reading, I realized that there are a lot of similes and very detailed descriptions in this story to help the reader feel the emotions that Tayo are feeling and so they can get a mental picture.
And yeah, that's it. But I really like this book only for reading the first thirty-three pages.

  2. hey so i completely agree with you about it getting kinda confusing with all the flashbacks but it gets easier once you keep reading.
I like the quote you choose. It's one of the many quotes that potrays the issues going on within tayo

  3. I agree about the quote, I also really liked the one about him being dead. Do you think he wishes he had been the one to die, not Rocky, or that he just feels dead because he is "invisible"?

  4. Nichole,
Thanks for the post. Please include page numbers you found the post in the event someone wants to take a look at it...hint, hint.
What strategies are you using to navigate through the flashbacks? Any suggestions to help your classmates?

  5. Well Ms. Champagne, I am able to sort through the flashbacks by always remembering that unless Tayo is with Harley then it is indeed a flashback.

And Tasha, I think he feels that he should have died in Rocky's place because he feels as if Rocky would have had more to offer to the world.

  6. If you read my post you'll get my full drift, but Tayo is driving be nuts! I can't stand this mopey kid's attitude! He's got his whole life ahead of him but he doesn't care if he lives or dies.

  7. Geoff...I get your feelings...it drives me a bit nuts too, but keep the 'walk a mile in my shoes' perspective. We all process differently regarding life's challenges, some aren't as resilient or strong...make sense?

  8. I think the whole class can agree that the flashbacks are very annoying (except a few people)...in the story i oddly like that not a lot of info is given and it lets you use your imagination to fill in the blank spots...what do you think of the flashbacks??? Ya any strategies would be helpful the read the book. I like your quote Nichole it was my favorite quot in the book still...

  9. YAY NICHOLE! I agree with Natalie (YEP PRETTY MUCH!). I like the quote you chose. But jeez I think this guy has problems. Like, get real...you're just as important as everyone else. Anyway, I liked your blog and I read how you understand the flashbacks. It makes a lot of sense and hopefully it will help me.
