Okay so I finished reading our first assignment and at first I found pretty hard to follow. With all the flashbacks going on you can get a little confused. It also confused me a little how the author introduces these charecters out of nowhere without anything really leading up to the introduction of the characters. I really liked the language that Silko uses. She has just enough detail so you can create an image, but not to much that it makes the book boring.
a quote that I really liked is "i will tell you something about stories,[he said] They aren't just entertainment. Don't be fooled. They are all we have, you see, all we have to fight off illness and death." I like this quote because the poem is so beautifully written. I think that this quote also gives an insight to what tayo what might go through later in the book and what he may experiance.

I agree with how you thought the introduction of the characters was kind of random. Although, I kind of found that it made the section more interesting because you had to use your brain to organize all the characters.
ReplyDeleteI like your quote because I also liked the poem at the beginning.
I also think that your quote gives insight to the importance of stories and things in Native American culture. Why do you think they are "all we have to fight off illness and death"?
ReplyDeleteTehani,
ReplyDeleteCouple things...watch your grammar i.e.capitalization etc especially when using an acutal quote.
What do you think Tayo will go through later after reading the quote you posted?
Ms. Champagne
I think the author means that stories are a cultural vehicle that express tradition and values. Oral history is a subjective way to share experiences and history.
ReplyDeleteI thought you should've put more words into your blog. But that's the least of my problems. I think the introduction of random characters was very creative. I haven't seen many books like that. But it does get confusing how you don't know who the heck they're talking about and stuff.
ReplyDeleteHey Tehani,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on how Silko writes her stories. At first it seems boring and you don't want to read it but she adds enough details to make the book somewhat interesting.
I think that Silko introduces the characters in a random, scattered pattern to somehow get the point across that Tayo is seriously confused about the meaning of his life, and his distress over losing Rocky and Josiah
