Literary Devices:
- Simile: "The wine was sweet and sticky, a little like cough syrup, but they drank it anyway because they had to if they wanted to get drunk." (Silko 21) I found this quote on the part where the narrator was talking about Harley and the other guys in the camp or town, I'm not sure, trying to get drunk on anything the could after the war. They were trying to drink wine that wasn't good anymore because they were fed up with everything.
- Metaphor: "The mule was getting bony; its hips looked sharp enough to push through the gray hide , the way bones tear through a carcass." (Silko 25) This was found where Tayo was with Harley and they were riding the burros. The drought had made all of the animals thin and hungry.
I feel bad for Tayo's auntie because she had lost everyone she loved and all she had left was Tayo. Tayo knew that he was the one that should have died not Rocky because Rocky had a plan in life and Tayo was never prepared. He feels that he has already died and Rocky is in the college game scores in the Albaquerque Journal. "It was him, Tayo, who had died, but somehow there had been a mistake with the corpses, and somehow his was still unburied." (Silko 28)
Im confused with your first quote, i may have just read it differently. But i thought they were drinking the wine when they were children because they were curious as to what being drunk felt like.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Erica, that the book is confusing and complicated.
ReplyDeleteAnd it is sad that because of the war people are wililng to do anything they can to like forget what happened kinda. And in this case it's getting drunk
Thats about it
I think that Tayo is talking but, hes like giving it to us in third person which makes it sound weird but that kinda confused me also
ReplyDeleteI agree with what devin said he might be talking in third person...i think this book reflects on how some soilders feel when they come back from war, maybe not as dramatic but still fell the same guilt about taking someones life...i agree it must be hard on his family members to have to take care of him or let alone see him suffering like that...
ReplyDeleteWhat is wrong with Tayo though because i'm still confused with that. Also the Auntie doesn't deserve sympathy she's judemental and I dont like her. I like your final quote though how it explains that Tayo believes Rocky should be alive.
ReplyDeleteErica,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your post.
Ryder is correct with the time frame of your quote. He is telling about the time they drank wine together as young boys.
I am flabbergasted by your comment about Tayo being the one that is supposed to die. Why is he any less of a human being?!?
Why do you think Tayo wasn't prepared...c'mon guys, you're not seeing the big picture.
Ms. Champagne
I like how everything was so well organized and neat. I agree with Ms.Champagne a little. Like I don't understand why we're all beating up on Tayo. I think he just has a lot of weight on his shoulders.
